Hyssop ( Hyssopus officinalis )

Extraction is by steam distillation of the leaves and flowers.

Odour - pleasant aromatic, warm, sweet and penetrating, reminiscent of sage, marjoram and lavender.

History - was used for purifying sacred places and as a strewing herb. An ingredient in Charteuse liqueur.

Uses - liquifies mucus and relieves bronchial spasms so helpful for asthma, bronchitis, catarrh, sorethroat, tonsillitis. Hypertensive so has a regulatory effect on the circulation and helps raise low bloodpressure. Enhances feelings of alertness and mental clarity; also eases emotional pain by bringing deep feelings into focus; helpful for melancholyand pessimism and frequently recommended for poor concentration, short-term mental fatigue and chronic nervous debility.

Blends with - cajeput, clary sage, eucalyptus, fennel, lavender, lemon, myrtle, niaouli, orange, rosemary, tangerine, tea tree.

Safety - non-irritant, non-sensitising; slightly toxic. Use moderately, not in pregnancy or if epileptic.
