Ylang-Ylang ( Cananga odorata )
History - traditionally blended in coconut oil to make an ointment for cosmetic and hair care. Was a major ingredient in Macassar hair dressing, for men, in the Victorian era. The anti-macassar was a piece of material placed over the back of chairs to protect them from the oily dressing.
Uses - has been used to reduce high blood pressure. Helpful for shock, anxiety and anger when its ability to slow over-rapid breathing can calm. A useful antidepressant and for feelings of anger, rage and frustration. Helpful for reducing stress and anxiety; for extreme mood swings of pre-menstrual syndrome and just before the onset of menstruation (try blending with clary sage and neroli). Softening and balancing to the skin; for dry and oily skin and is reputed to have a balancing effect on sebum production.
Blends with - jasmine, lavender, neroli, the citrus oils, rosewood, sandalwood.
