Bergamot ( Citrus bergamia )
Bergamot; Citrus aurantium subsp. bergamia.
Extraction is by expression of the peel of the nearly ripe fruit.
History - Named after the Italian city of Bergamo in Lombardy, where the oil was first sold. Gives Earl Grey tea its unusual flavour. An important ingredient in classic Eau de Cologne were it is blended with neroli, rosemary and spirits.
Odour - Light, delicate and refreshing; similar to lemon and orange with a slight floral overtone.
Uses - Sedative yet uplifting qualities make it an ideal oil to use in a vaporiser, bath or massage for anxiety, depression and nervous tension.
Soothes anger and frustration. Can be used as an inhalation for respiratory tract infection such as tonsillitis, bronchitis and tuberculosis.
When combined with tea tree it can be used for cold sores, chicken pox and shingles. Stimulates the liver and stomch relieving distension and heaviness as well as the associated despondency.
Useful for oily skin and as a deodorising agent.
Blends well with - basil, the chamomiles, cypress, geranium, jasmine, lavender, neroli, orange, peppermint, sandalwood.
