Cajuput ( Melaleuca leucadendron )
Extracted by steam distillation from the young twigs, leaves and buds.
Odour - penetrating, camphoraceous-medicina, eucalyptus like odour.
History - Traditionally used by the aborigines of Australia as a local analgesic.
Uses - Useful as an inhalation to clear thoughts and dissipate sluggish feelings. Its antiseptic and expectorant qualities make it a useful oil, when vapourised, for respiratory tract infections, such as bronchitis, laryngitis, sinusitis and sore throats. It may by helpful for asthma. It can be used for pain relief, with massage, for neuralgia, headaches, gout, chronic rheumatism, muscle stiffness and general aches and pains. its antiseptic properties make it useful for acne and psoriasis. It is used in dentistry as an antiseptic.
Blends well with - bergamot, black pepper, eucalyptus, fennel, frankincense, lemon, peppermint, rosewood, tea tree.
Safety - non-toxic, non-sensitising, may be irritant. As cajuput is a stimulant it is not advisable to use it in an inhalation before bedtime.
