Thyme,Red ( Thymus vulgaris )
Extraction is by steam distillation of the dried or partially dried leaves and flowering tops.
Odour - intense warm herbaceous, somewhat spicy and distinctly aromatic.
History - domestic culinary herb. There are over 300 varieties of thyme. Used by the Egyptians for embalming and the Romans to promote bravery. It was still in use, as a hospital disinfectant, in France, until World War 1.
Uses - strengthens the immune system making it useful for infections. Has been used for chronic fatigue, catarrhal coughs and bronchitis, sore throats, asthma. Has also been used for gout, rheumatic pain, arthritis and sports injuries. An effective household cleanser used in hot water to clean kitchen and bathroom surfaces.
Blends with - bergamot, eucalyptus, juniper, lavender, lemon, marjoram, niaouli, rosemary.

Safety - non-toxic, mucous membrane irritant, may cause dermal irritation and sensitisation in some; use in low dose and not with those with high blood pressure.
